I would go to school, come home, clean the house, babysit my second and third cousins, hang out on the stoop, wait for my aunt to come home, have dinner with her and wait until she fell asleep then I broke out. The Mudd Club was one of my favorite spots to go out thats where I was introduced to James Chance and the Contortions and Talking Heads. I didnt have the scratch to make it livable, but I met this guy named Peter Marino [the architect and designer] in the elevator who was doing a high-end renovation on the top floor and negotiated with him. We were in the habit of throwing parties on Saturday nights. I got my first loft in what was called Lower Manhattan before it was renamed the Triangle Below Canal, which was the realtors term that became TriBeCa, in 1967. We cant put the money out for something this queer. Then [writer and editor] Bob Colacello saw the project and said, Andy Warhol has a three-book deal with Houghton Mifflin. I had to be at the theater by 7 oclock so I could start my process and get ready before half-hour call. (What a loft was, I wasnt entirely sure.) People used to say, The East Village will be gone when theres a Gap, and then, in the late 80s, one opened on the corner of St. Marks and Second Avenue. I tried to write every single day, first thing in the morning, 10 a.m. It cut down a great number of the people who were out there doing it, but at the same time, the ones who were left were much more intense about it. I knew so many people in Harlem, I kept a second apartment in the Bronx, where I tried to be unseen. The Upper West Side has always been a great place to buy food, with terrific places for fish and vegetables. I dont even know if it was named AIDS at that point. (And Ski Bar even opened a Ski Bar 2 pop-up at Hunter Mountain during the winter. Creative Time ran Art on the Beach on the landfill that is now Battery Park City back then it was just a huge field of sand. I went over and started chatting with him, and we became completely engrossed in this conversation about jazz. And yet, over the years, bars continued to try to offer ladies night deals (whether discounted or completely free drinks) and various factions had tried to stop them. We were such fashion victims. We had a studio on Bleecker near Seventh Avenue. I was worried about how the crowd there would receive the Carters. Hed just been released from prison, and his prison memoir, In the Belly of the Beast, had been published that week. The venues didn't matter to me. I remember thinking, How long can this go on? It was right next to the Chelsea Hotel, where I was living. Galleries and museums didnt exhibit their work at that time. Dinner on the Upper East Side with a former president of the United States. That's what Bennigan's, an Irish-themed bar and grill, offered in the 1980s. She and Larry Gagosian had this space, it was a condo loft in a building on West Broadway. I really had no business buying my loft on West Broadway in those years. It was a brilliantly sunny day, and standing outside was Dustin Hoffman. By the time midnight came around and I knew my parents were sleeping, I would sneak out the window down onto the porch. The original Murray Hill restaurant expanded to this location in 2011, and in 2017 added an upstairs cocktail bar to entice a younger crowd. I was always worried about getting a dirty shirt or chipping a tooth., Ski Bars biggest attraction was the Slalom Shot, a four-foot-long slab of ice with a twisting trail cut into it. It was frequented by many celebrities, especially actors and authors. Pierre Francillon and Richard Alvarez, both artists and friends of fashion designer Andre Walker, in 1983 at the Middle Collegiate Church, where Walker held a fashion show. For a while I lived on the Upper West Side, on the parlor floor of a brownstone on 71st Street between Amsterdam and Columbus.
